The Ruskeasuo depot is Finland’s first combined tram and bus depot. The depot was completed in May 2024, and tram operations and maintenance will begin by the end of the year. The depot will serve tram lines in the city center, and it will function as the main depot during the construction of the new Koskela depot. Regional bus lines operated by HSL will run from the bus deck located on the roof of the depot.
The bus parking area and daily maintenance that were previously located on the asphalt field at the site of the new depot building have been relocated to the roof of the building, freeing up the ground floor for tram depot operations.
The tram storage hall is being built with cast-in-place concrete pillars and post-tensioned concrete slabs. The facades consist of board form-finished concrete, glass, and wooden-clad railings. The area structures include concrete support walls, and the access area is paved with grass stone tracks.
The project makes extensive use of fiber-reinforced concrete for track and foundation structures, as well as low-carbon concrete.
