Pilke is a completely wooden structure office and exhibition building for Metsähallitus. It is located in the city of Rovaniemi, next to Arktikum museum and science center. The building connects two different yard levels on the site, that has a height difference of 10 meters. The wide southern end of the building forms a new public town square with Arktikum arch and stairs and the western facade has an important role creating a boundary to a park.
Wood is the only major, truly renewable construction material and was therefore a natural choice for Metsähallitus, an expert in the use of renewable natural resources. Wooden office building’s carbon dioxide emissions are only a third of the steel or concrete building’s in comparison.
Inside the building spaces are stuated around two internal courtyards: an exhibition hall and an office lobby space. The exhibition hall is nearly twenty meters high open space in the heart of the building, housing a 650 square-meter Pilke exhibition.
